Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Fine specimens.

Fine specimens.

INTRODUCTION. In today’s review: brevity. Cap America’s venture into phase two of Marvel’s elaborate world domination plan proves to be an improvement over its predecessor.

PLOT. Not a line in the movie itself but “I have a bad feeling about this,” accurately describes the sensations  behind The Winter Soldier. The story isn’t bad – far from it in fact – but Steve Rogers & Co. are certainly going through an emotionally rough patch of events with the continuing emergence of HYDRA. So yes, expect suspenseful, witty writing and daredevil action! But also expect feeeeeeliiiiings.

CHARACTERS. So many familiar faces. So many established histories. Cap America manages to simultaneously pull off ‘Boy Scout Integrity’ and ‘Rebel Badass’. Everyone else is just as excellent.  Nick Fury and Black Widow in particular have added a layer of moral complexity to what may have otherwise been a straightforward narrative. Good on you, Marvel.

CONCLUSION. Who am I kidding? I’m pretty late to the party so you’ve probably already beaten me to this! But a definite thumbs up and a hell yes to all you fence-sitters out there.

STORY: 7/10
OVERALL: 7.5/10
